Aqulamation, or alkaline hydrolysis, is a method of disposing bodies that uses water, heat, and alkaline (usually potash or caustic soda) to break down organic tissue. This process is presented as an ecological alternative to traditional cremation, as it consumes less energy and does not emit air pollutants. After aquamation, only the bones remain, which are then reduced to powder, similar to ashes after a cremation, and returned to the family.
