The Hickory is often seen as an ally carrying the message of letting go of things. Sometimes we feel like we are carrying the weight of the world when in fact it is only us who is holding ourselves back. The oval hickory is a symbol of balance and a fresh start. We find it in Greek mythology to refer to forgiveness and resistance. Carya is also the Greek word for “nut”. Indeed, this tree is a major producer of nuts that were an important source of food for First Nations peoples.
The oval hickory is easily distinguishable at maturity because it has large strips of bark that fray on its trunk. It produces extremely hard wood that is used to make power tools and furniture. It can reach heights of up to 25 meters and attracts a large number of birds and small mammals that benefit from its hospitality.
This tree represents mutual aid and balance.
