A tree with multiple symbols for the indigenous peoples of Quebec, the White Pine is the tree of peace in Iroquois culture. Legend has it that a terrible conflict had been firmly rooted for several generations between five Iroquois peoples. Legend has it that a peacemaker was sent by the creator to unite warring nations. To symbolize peace, he designated the white pine, probably since this tree bears its needles in clusters of five, representing the five nations. It is thanks to this indigenous history that we understand why the White Pine is called the “tree of peace” and why it carries such power here. As a tree that is always green, the White Pine reminds us that peace work is never-ending; it is a work that we need to continue in our own lives, in our communities, in our families, and in our hearts. When you see a White Pine, stop and enjoy its imposing presence and peaceful energy.
Have you ever noticed tall trees with broad branches extending beyond the horizon line at the top of the mountains? If yes, they were most likely White Pines. This large conifer, which can reach over 40 meters, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable trees in Eastern Canada. In addition to being one of the largest trees in our forests, it is one of those that become the widest in terms of both trunk diameter and crown width. Its widest branches can reach twenty meters and its trunk more than 1.5 meters. Adapting to almost any environment, however, it prefers very sunny places, as this is where it grows the fastest.
This tree represents peace and unity.
