Canadian hemlock

For many Indigenous communities in southern Quebec, hemlock was a sign of warmth and security. Indeed, its large dense summit allowed travelers to take shelter during winter expeditions. In addition, its needles give a comforting herbal tea and its delicate twigs could be used as a mattress.

A very large tree native to eastern North America, it can sometimes reach more than 50 meters in height and 1.5 meters in diameter at the stump. Very shade-tolerant and slow growing, this tree can wait several decades under dominant trees before fully deploying. At this moment, the hemlock reveals its magnificent conical crown that can reach 12 meters in width. Several species of birds and small mammals inhabit the cavities of old specimens. Hemlock is the least cold-resistant conifer in Quebec, which explains its rather restricted distribution area. Its roots adapt to the soil, and develop sometimes laterally, sometimes in depth. In a suitable environment, it can live for nearly 1000 years.
